WELCOME ///\ Keith Stern

There is magic in wood if you let it speak.

I believe in honoring the natural beauty of wood by creating objects that will last a lifetime. I started woodworking more than a decade ago in my father’s basement wood shop using tools handed down from my grandfather’s days as a carpenter. What began as projects to create items to fill my small living spaces expanded to larger furniture, ornate wedding gifts for my siblings, and custom pieces for my friends’ and family’s houses.

I continue to have an endless list of projects to be completed in my small wood shop in my basement in Roslindale where I live with my wife, Rachel, and our dog, Beau. I work full time as an engineer and strategist for a local footwear company but fill my nights and weekends training for my next marathon and working away on big and small projects.

I started Deep Roots Woodworking as a way to expose more people to the beauty of well built, long lasting wood pieces. If you are looking for an upgrade from flat-pack furniture or need a custom piece to fit your exact dimensions and vision, I can help you get there.

THE PROCESS

Each project starts with a consult. Your initial email should include your contact information, a description of the project, and inspiration photos if possible. I will then reach out for an initial phone call to discuss details of the project including dimensions, materials, finish, and timelines. I will also schedule an on site visit if your job requires detailed measurements or installation. I will then draft details of the project and provide a price estimate. While I will use sketches and example images to give you a complete vision of the work, I do not work with full renderings or CADs. You will need some trust and imagination but I will check in throughout the project as any design choices arise. Reserving the job will require 1/3 down payment and remaining paid upon completion.

A note on cost. Project cost will vary widely depending on the materials, finish, scale, and detailed work required. For reference, “smalls” range from $50-$150 and larger furniture items can average up to $800-$1,500. Please reach out and we can work together to select materials and finishes that will work within your budget.

A note on timelines. I will be upfront during the consult about timing. If your project has specific deadlines please include that in your initial contact. Work can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on scale and my availability.

A note on shipping. I will ship smalls and some furniture at your cost and risk. I will deliver or install projects only within the greater Boston area.

A note on perfection. I strive for perfection in my work. Like most makers, this will be a lifelong pursuit. Unlike factory items, handmade items will not be perfect. In many’s eyes, natural imperfections of the wood and maker’s marks from hand tools add to the beauty of custom pieces. However, I stand by my work and if you are not satisfied with the finished piece I will strive to make it right.
